Ethiopian Edir Mutual Assistance in New York Inc.

450 Lexington Ave. 4th Floor

New York, NY 10017

A Brief History

Mutual aid has deep roots in the Ethiopian social fabric. The creation of this much needed mutual aid association is testimony to the foresight and vision of its founders. They have created a mutual aid group for burial, with a rotating credit and self-help for thousands of Ethiopians living in the Metro New York area. As a validation of their creative thinking, currently we are witnessing a growing interest in the Association. On behalf of our members, we salute and pay tribute to the founders who have brought our group to this point. A special thanks goes to Medhanealm Church and its leaders not only for their generosity in accommodating all our needs but also for their encouragement of thinking positive and expect for the best.

The Association was established on April 4, 2002 in its current form and started giving service to its members. EEMAA was incorporated and registered as non-profit tax exempt organization with New York State on August 23, 2006. This milestone was reached after a lengthy process which involves developing the Bylaws, securing legal recognition, and putting in place the financial framework.

EEMAA is a non-sectarian, non-religious and non-political organization.
